Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress After Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight

Amanda Nguyen, a women's health researcher, was onboard the New Shepard NS-31 rocket in April 2025.

A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the wake of a landmark journey to the edge of space.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in the spring, which also included celebrity crewmates.

The high-profile flight was met with derision by some, who questioned its cost and ecological impact.

Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a public message, recalling a check-in call from a mission companion in the aftermath of the flight.

She characterized the press attention and digital reaction as an barrage beyond typical human coping.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

Eclipsed by Backlash

The researcher, who has focused her career on female health science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and extensive preparation to the historic significance of her background – was drowned out under the tide of sexist vitriol.

She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy protecting the rights of survivors of assault.

Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a long campaign for accountability.

A Path to Recovery

Months following fulfilling her dream, she noted the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she thanked the supporters whose kindness helped save her. “Your support rescued me,” she said.

She added that even with the backlash, significant positive outcomes had emerged from the flight, such as increased focus on her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

The Historic Journey

The self-operating New Shepard rocket launched from Texas in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a brief suborbital flight that crossed the internationally recognized boundary of space.

The team of pioneers also featured leaders in multiple disciplines.

The enterprise behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a well-known tech mogul.
