Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, but Jones maintains he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters present at the game as his team secured a 37-22 victory.
“It was unfortunate. That was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones stated during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Dallas supporters—not Jets fans, our fans. The entire stadium was filled with enthusiasm for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the gesture was completely unintentional, occurring amid the excitement following the team’s last score. “I simply showed the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was accidentally done. This is sincere. Should you call it accidental, you can. But it got resolved rapidly.”
League Precedent for Owner Penalties
This incident isn’t the initial instance an NFL owner has been penalized for misconduct. Previous examples include:
- Panthers proprietor Tepper was penalized $300K for throwing a drink at spectators in January 2024.
