Democrats Criticize Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials voiced outrage after Donald Trump accused a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "traitors" and asserted they should be taken into custody and punished "by death" following their posting of a contentious video.
The Content That Provoked the Controversy
The clip, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who previously served in defense or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all took an oath to defend and defend this constitution," the officials affirmed in the 90-second video. "And right now, the risks to our governing document don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline improper directives, you can reject unlawful commands, you should reject improper directives. No one has to execute commands that break the law or our constitution."
Trump's Furious Reaction
The clip appeared to prompt a heated reaction from the ex-president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on Truth Social: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these turncoats to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he wrote: "This constitutes really concerning, and Dangerous to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to remain. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he continued: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also reposted a declaration that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Representatives Respond
Following Trump's remarks on that day, Democratic leadership published a combined announcement censuring the remarks.
"Partisan aggression has no place in this nation," they wrote. "Congress members who participated in the video all worked our United States with great patriotism and excellence. We clearly denounce Donald Trump's offensive and harmful death threats against congressional representatives, and call on GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The party representatives also stated that they had been in touch with law enforcement "to ensure the safety of these members and their loved ones."
"Donald Trump must right away remove these extreme online messages and withdraw his dangerous language before he leads to violence," the statement stated.
Representatives' Defiant Answer
The lawmakers who were featured in the video also issued a declaration.
"We identify as former service members and security experts who love this United States and took an oath to defend and uphold the national charter of the United States," they stated. "Our pledge lasts a lifetime, and we intend to keep it. No intimidation, pressure, or call for violence will prevent us from that fundamental duty."
"The most revealing aspect is that the former president deems it punishable by execution for us to restate the legal requirements," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their protection as they fulfill their vow to the constitution and obligation to obey only lawful orders. It is not only the proper thing to do, but also our responsibility."
They continued: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the ex-president's calls for our execution and partisan aggression. This is a moment for ethical certainty."
More Governmental Comments
The Senate Democratic leader also condemned Trump's statements and shared on online networks: "It's important to understand: the former president is calling for the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This constitutes an clear THREAT. Every Senator, each house member, the entire nation – irrespective of political affiliation – should denounce this without delay and absolutely."
The Conservative official supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had participated in "rebellion", describing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of the government instructing military personnel to disobey orders, I think that represents historic in American history."
The GOP official also according to sources told the press that in what he reviewed of Trump's publications, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the wording and determine all that."
White House Statement
During a administration briefing on that day, when inquired by a journalist, "Is the president want to execute congressional representatives?", the White House press secretary responded: "Certainly not."
"We should understand about what the president is reacting to," the representative said. "We see current representatives of the American legislature who conspired to orchestrate a video message to individuals of the American armed forces, to serving soldiers encouraging them to disobey the president's lawful orders."
She said: "The purity of our military relies on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is violated, it can lead to fatalities, it can lead to confusion, and that is exactly what these elected officials ... are fundamentally promoting."
