Eric Adams Plans to Back Former Governor Andrew Cuomo in New York City Mayoral Race

New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared his plan to endorse former Governor Cuomo in the forthcoming election for mayor, despite months of disagreements between the pair of Democrats.

A Surprising Reversal After Recent Criticism

Only weeks ago, the mayor had strongly criticized the former governor, calling him a “deceptive figure and a liar” and accusing him of having “a career of marginalizing Black political contenders.” However, in a recent development, Adams reversed course, stating he now plans to appear with the former governor in neighborhoods where he holds significant backing.

“I think that it is imperative to energize the communities of color that have experienced urban displacement on how important this election is,” Adams stated.

Adams continued, “Residents have seen their housing costs rise in terms of neighborhood changes and they have been overlooked in those areas, and I’m going to go to those communities and talk directly with community leaders and groups and I will appear with the former governor in those neighborhoods and get them involved.”

Race Dynamics and Recent Events

The election battle has so far been dominated by the competition between the former governor and democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani, whose rise in the polls has attracted attention internationally and represented hopes for a rejuvenated progressive wing of the Democratic party.

In a latest candidate forum, both Mamdani and Republican nominee his conservative opponent stated they would reject Adams’s endorsement if extended.

Months ago, the mayor had launched his bid for another term as an independent after being indicted on legal accusations which were later dismissed in return for Adams’s cooperation with government enforcement actions across New York City.

During a unrelated press conference on Thursday, Adams answered reporters inquiring into the endorsement plan by stating, “I’ll be with Andrew this evening.”

The announcement came a day after Adams and Cuomo were seen sitting courtside together at the the NBA team's season opener at the famous arena, which occurred immediately following a contentious mayoral debate.
