German Mayor Critically Injured in Stabbing Attack, Police Confirm

A major police operation is now under way in Herdecke

A recently appointed municipal leader in western Germany has been stabbed and left critically injured close to her residence, police say.

The official, 57, is a affiliate of the SPD political group and became the mayor of Herdecke in the North-Rhine Westphalia state in September.

Area law enforcement say a significant response is under way in the small town. Investigators indicate every possibility is being checked, but they are considering a domestic link.

The Chancellor censured what he called "a heinous act", stating: "We fear for the life of the newly elected mayor, the victim, and wish for complete healing."

The party expressed its party members were deeply shocked by the attack.

Officials confirm her two children - a 17-year-old girl, and a teenage boy - made an emergency call to police at midday local time (11:00 BST).

The children were later taken away for interviewing and forensic investigation. A reporter at the scene witnessed a young person entering a law enforcement vehicle.
