Jets Coach Glenn Optimistic Kris Boyd Will Recover Fully After NYC Incident
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn mentioned that he has been in contact with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the athlete will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan early Sunday morning.
Glenn noted that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during their latest talk.
“That’s what eases my mind, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they are doing well and he is expected to recover fully.”
It remained unclear when Boyd would leave the hospital, where he is reported as serious yet stable.
“Still unsure,” the coach said. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, his attitude was encouraging. Once more, that’s what gives me comfort, because of his outlook and he’s talking that way.”
NYPD shared security footage earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. The reason behind the incident remains under investigation and authorities said it’s not clear if Boyd was targeted. No other injuries as confirmed by officials.
The incident occurred around 2 a.m. on Sunday in the area between Madison Square Garden and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, 29, was transported to Bellevue Hospital after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, as reported. The assailant escaped.
Glenn mentioned Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his spouse are new parents to a child.
“The first thing I thought about, he has a new baby,” Glenn said. “My mind went to his family, I’m thinking about his kid and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“There is a procedure involved, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he will recover excellently.”
Boyd hasn’t played this season, his debut year with New York, after being placed on injured reserve on mid-August with a shoulder injury that involved surgical repair.
Boyd came to New York as a new signing in spring and was projected as a significant contributor of the team’s updated special teams under the coach and ST coordinator the special teams coach. However, he got hurt during a training camp practice on 2 August and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present all season long while recovering from the shoulder injury.
“He has stayed engaged with the team,” Glenn stated. “Certainly, he attends every game. He is completely involved. Given his status as a special teams standout, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, from Texas, began his career with the Vikings after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He later played for Arizona in last year and then joined Houston’s practice squad after that. Boyd signed a one-year contract for $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
