Outrage as Beloved South African DJ Gunned Down in the City of Johannesburg.
A popular South African media personality and entertainer has been murdered in the country's largest city Johannesburg, causing national outrage across a nation battling entrenched crime.
Warrick Stock, popularly known as DJ Warras, was gunned down in the downtown area on Tuesday afternoon.
Police said the forty-year-old entertainer was approached by a trio of assailants, with one began shooting at him before running away.
The reason of the attack remains unclear and no arrests are in custody, according to authorities.
How It Happened
Law enforcement said that Stock was ambushed as he was leaving a building near the city center landmark.
He had devoted time at the building overseeing the installation of security systems, which had been reportedly taken over by squatters, according to reports.
"Authorities believe the deceased was confronted by three unknown suspects after he parked his car, and they opened fire at him before running from the location on foot," an official report confirmed.
CCTV footage reportedly depicted a suspect with dreadlocks and wearing what appeared to be a guard's attire firing shots on Stock before running away.
The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but collapsed across the street.
It was further revealed that Stock had an gun that was not fired and no items were stolen during the incident.
Key evidence, like cartridges, were recovered from the scene.
Investigation Ongoing
Officials are asking members of the public who may have have information to come forward.
"Our information indicates they covered significant ground after the shooting, and police have been following their trail to determine their whereabouts," stated a police chief.
A Nation in Mourning
His family member, Nicole Stock, said the relatives are devastated to understand the tragedy.
"Words fail me. I don't have words," she said.
"Everyone understood he was a voice for many people. He spoke out bravely about issues not many people were ready to speak about. This is a devastating blow."
She requested the public to refrain from sharing graphic images from the scene, explaining this was an incredibly difficult time, particularly for Stock's young family.

Stock was the presenter of Ngicel' iVisa, a series that aired on a popular local broadcasting platform.
Beyond his work in broadcasting, Stock was active in various commercial activities, including security provision, supplying VIP protection services and managing safety for high-profile events across South Africa.
He was also said to be engaged in building administration and was involved in building evictions.

His murder has caused national trauma and prompted an wave of remembrances from his fans, the government and political parties.
A government minister commented he was furious and grief-stricken by Stock's killing.
"He expressed his views without fear or favour. He even challenged me and my actions as a minister. He was a pure example of who we must aspire to be," the minister added.
A political leader said the "shocking killing of DJ Warras in broad daylight is a trauma for all South Africans".
A media executive expressed that "DJ Warras was more than just a face of a reality series. He was a talented storyteller, a passionate music lover and a kind-hearted individual who brought excitement and dynamism to every appearance. His artistic passion left an lasting impression."
In a statement, the channel he worked for said Stock was known for his magnetism, kindness and quick humor, adding that his influence "will be remembered".
Context of Crime
South Africa, the continent's most industrialised nation, has one of the globally elevated murder rates, fuelled by robberies and organized criminal activity, with some 63 people losing their lives per day in a recent six-month period, as per government figures.
