Putin Assures Uninterrupted Energy Supplies to India in Snub of US Sanctions

Amid a clear statement to the West, President Vladimir Putin stated to Prime Minister Narendra Modi that Russia remains committed to guarantee “unbroken” deliveries of energy resources to India. The announcement came during a summit where both heads of state met in Delhi and declared their bilateral ties were “immune to external pressure.”

A Message For the Western Countries

Putin's comments, made on Friday, was widely seen to be targeted at western countries, who have sought to pressure New Delhi into scaling back its historical relations with Moscow. The context is in response to earlier American measures, notably the introduction of import duties against Indian goods because of its acquisition of Russian oil.

“Our nation is a reliable source of energy resources and everything necessary for the advancement of India’s economy,” Putin stated. “Moscow stands willing to continue guaranteeing the steady delivery of resources for the booming Indian economy.”

Prime Minister Modi, while not mentioning oil explicitly, echoed the focus by noting that “secure fuel supplies has been a strong and important cornerstone of the Indo-Russian alliance.”

Challenging US Interference

Prior to the summit, during a television interview, Putin had challenged American pressure on India's oil imports. Putin stated, “Should America has the right to buy our nuclear fuel, how can you deny India claim the equivalent access?”

Putin's arrival represented his first visit to India since the start of the war in Ukraine, and the two nations made a clear effort to display that the bond between the two leaders remained intact.

An Unusual Reception

Employing an notable move, the Indian PM personally greeted Putin as he disembarked. The two embraced warmly as close allies before having a one-on-one meal the night before the summit.

Modi later described India's alliance with Russia as “a lodestar” and added it was “built on shared respect and profound confidence.”

Reaffirming Bilateral Ties

The meeting resulted in a number of significant pacts regarding defence and financial collaboration. A cornerstone agreement was the finalization of an economic cooperation programme that runs to 2030, which aims to double bilateral trade to a hundred billion USD each year by the target year.

The leaders also pledged to recalibrate their strategic cooperation. Although Russia continues to be India's primary source of weapons, this role has declined lately as India aims to widen its sources.

The official release highlighted cooperation in the joint production of cutting-edge weapons platforms, although explicit reference of systems like the Su-57 fighter jet were omitted.

Ultimately, Russia and India reiterated that in the “current complex, difficult, and volatile international environment, their relationship remain strong to foreign influence.”
