Red Cross Assists Militant Group in Search for Bodies of Israeli Hostages in Gaza Strip

A Red Cross official confirmed that its personnel joined members of Hamas into zones of the Gaza Strip currently controlled by Israeli military control to support the search for the remains of individuals held captive.

Ceasefire Agreements and Captive Bodies Handover

As part of the truce negotiated by the United States, which began on October 10, Hamas is required to return the bodies of all captives as soon as possible. As a reciprocal measure, Israel has consented to transfer the remains of 15 Palestinians for every Israeli body returned.

Hamas has to date handed back the bodies of 15 of those held captive but zero in the last five days, as some of those remains are thought to be in locations past the yellow line designating the temporary truce line.

The spokesperson continued: “Those involved to the conflict determined the modalities of the mission and delegated the ICRC to act as a impartial mediator. We was not involved in the discussions.”

Efforts to locate for the remains of Israeli hostages has become one of the most delicate matters in the truce reached between the parties. However, the attempt to locate the remains has been difficult from the beginning, given the existence of an estimated 60m tonnes of debris across the territory, where, according to health officials, at least ten thousand residents are recorded as missing, trapped under the debris.

Diverging Claims on Remains Location

Hamas has claimed it does not know the exact locations of all the remains, saying it has lost contact with a number of its teams that had been holding the hostages and were allegedly killed during Israeli bombardments.

However, an official representative asserted that Hamas was aware of the whereabouts of the remains. “Should the group exerted greater effort, they would be able to retrieve the remains of our captives,” the official said.

US Position and Disarmament Discussions

While the US president has acknowledged that some of the bodies are difficult to access, he said that “others they can hand over immediately and, for some reason, they are failing to do so.”
