The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its seventh installment, announced by the broadcaster.

A brand new six-episode series written by the show's creator starts production in Belfast in the coming months, according to the production team.

Vicky McClure shared her enthusiasm about the comeback, stating she was "thrilled" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be back filming together soon."

The last season wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived recently.

Fresh Obstacles for The Team

The seventh season will open with the anti-corruption unit having been disbanded and rebranded as the new police oversight body, as revealed by the announcement.

Martin Compston's character, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to combat corruption within the law enforcement.

The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, the trio are assigned their "most sensitive case to date."

Fresh Face and Complex Case

An additional officer, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charming officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a offender.

Yet, this investigation could be a deliberate distraction from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.

Speaking about the renewal, the creator said: "All cast and crew feels enormous gratitude to the dedicated viewers."

"We're privileged to have had so many fans track the developments of the unit over multiple series and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh installment."

Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was off air, so I've been forced to use my creativity."

Actor Responses

The Scottish actor called being part of the series as "the role of a career".

"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."

"I can't wait to pull the waistcoat on again and reunite with everyone," he said.

The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is back! Can't wait to work with Jed, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll be there shortly!"

Adrian Dunbar commented: "As we count down the AC-12 return, what a joy it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."

"Delighted with the announcement and anticipating those unexpected twists and turns."

Show History

The drama launched in the early 2010s and evolved into one of the most popular TV dramas of the last decade, featuring guest stars such as Stephen Graham.

The BBC has not yet announced exactly the upcoming series will hit screens.

The finale of season six brought the extended plot about the search for criminal mastermind known as "H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the moment there were no intentions for further series.

However, the corporation announced on this week that a new season is now being produced.
