The Lions of Teranga's Rising Talent Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a football he clings to until after our chat. This serves as a powerful symbol for a dream he has never let slip. “My sole focus was football; my mind was set on nothing else,” states this AS Monaco and Senegal midfielder.

His determination and raw talent won over clubs like Metz, Monaco, and Génération Foot. Yet, the hardest approval to secure didn't come from a club executive or coach, it was from his dad. “He didn’t want me to play football but it’s because he hadn’t seen me play,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Early Hurdles

Eventually, on “a special day,” he received his father’s blessing to pursue his path in the game. A further barrier was his modest frame, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a deal.

However, the famed academy – the club that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, Génération Foot were “astonished” to discover he was not tied down. They acted quickly. “They took me directly to the academy. They didn’t want me from returning to Casamance,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Season and European Arrival

That decision set him on a pathway to Europe. His breakthrough was 2023, “a year to remember,” which began with him lifting the CHAN trophy. Shortly after, despite fatigue, he competed in the U-20 Africa Cup, leading his country to victory and being named player of the tournament.

Soon after, he signed for Metz, following in the footsteps of Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” says the youngster. He has lived alone in Europe, a choice his relatives encourage to keep him focused.

Inspiration and Playing Style

Distractions are not really a concern for Camara, who looks up to the Belgian maestro's “humility” and exceptional skills. Additionally, he's a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his international teammate Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His ball striking and precision from set pieces are key strengths. Camara confesses he must to control his competitive fire, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It is a habit that is following me!” he jokes.

Life at Monaco, Teammates and Future Ambitions

With his current club, he values learning from veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are really lucky,” he said.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – there's no denying it. If you beat England on their soil…,” he states, referencing a historic 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

On a potential future move to the Premier League, he is committed to Monaco at present. “I am very comfortable here,” he insists. He is often teased by Senegalese legend El-Hadji Diouf about his two Africa Young Player of the Year awards. He laughs, but is serious about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England at Wembley… it instills belief.”

Looking ahead, this talented midfielder blends humble beginnings, steely determination, and big dreams as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and forge his own lasting legacy in the world of football.
