What We Know Concerning the Fatalities of the Bondi Beach Terrorist Incident

At least 16 individuals perished and over 40 were wounded when attackers fired on a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach, an incident Australian police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, authorities have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the alleged gunmen. Furthermore, 42 people with injuries were admitted to the hospital.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but police believe their ages are from 10 and 87 years old.

Eli Schlanger

Originally from London clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was the first to be publicly identified.

Known as a father of five children, he was the assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi. Relatives and friends described him as “lively, dynamic, and vibrant and a very kind and sociable person who loved to help people”.

“How is it possible that a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, meet his end in this way?” a relative said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son just a few months ago.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also confirmed among the deceased, according to his wife.

She recounted the moments leading up to the attack, explaining they had been standing together when the shooting began. “He shielded me because he wished to be near me,” she said.

The husband and wife were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later relocated to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have confirmed that French national Dan Elkayam is among the dead.

In a statement, the Foreign Minister expressed that France mourned with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This despicable act is a fresh and tragic example of a revolting outpouring of hatred against Jews that we must put a stop to,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital succumbed to her injuries, according to police reports.

One Israeli Citizen

One victim from Israel was also killed during the attack, as per reports referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain receiving treatment, with several in serious condition. The injured comprise two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to confront one of the attackers. Described as a local hero, he sustained bullet wounds but is in stable condition in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

Among the injured is Arsen Ostrovsky, a public affairs professional. It has been reported he was injured and underwent treatment in hospital.

In a message, he recounted the scene as an “utter carnage,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He stated he believed it was a “stroke of luck” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a community director, was also injured in the shooting. He told reporters he listened to “a large number” of gunshots.

“Initially, I believed it was something less lethal, but it’s gone into my own skin and into my leg,” he explained. “I was hit. They bandaged me up. I’m ok.”
